The Dutch female fronted rockband In-Tension exists since late 2002. The band released their debut cd “Fragments” as a gradutation project for the famous Rockacademy in Tilburg. It was released independently in February 2004.
And now we have their second release: Transfigure.
At first glance you might think this is just another female-gothic- rock act: high female voices, heavy guitars, nice artwork… but then you are wrong.
The music sounds much more progressive than you might expect. The band is clearly more inspired by bands like Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation and ….yes …even Porcupine Tree than Nightwish (to name just one).
The songs are ok and these guys absolutely master their instruments. Therefore it’s a pity the production sounds too thin. Also Noortjes voice sometimes lacks the power, one might expect from a front vocalist in a progressive rock band. Very often the voice makes the difference between a fine band and a worldclass act.
Nevertheless this cd is absolutely worth your attention. I am looking forward to their third cd. In-Tension’s “transfigure” is an absolute winner.

Deze Nederlandse band zag het levenslicht in 2002. De band bracht hun eerste cd ‘Fragments” uit als eindwerk voor hun studies op de befaamde rockacademie in Tilburg.
Nu is er dus hun tweede worp “Transfigure”. En dit is best een fijn schijfje. Op mijn promo-exemplaar staan slechts 4 nummers. Of deze vier nummers een opwarmer zijn voor een full cd of de band het houdt bij dit ep-tje is mij niet helemaal duidelijk.
Nog voor je de cd in je speler schuift, denk je dat dit het zoveelste female gothic bandje is: frontvrouw met hoge vocalen en stevige gitaren. Maar dat is het nu precies niet…of toch niet helemaal. De band klinkt behoorlijk progressief en het geluid van dit viertal leunt veel dichter aan bij acts als Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation…en ja, waarom niet, Porcupine Tree dan pakweg Nightwish. Wie doorheen het hoge stemgeluid van Noortje luistert, ontdekt een behoorlijk progressief werkstuk. De songs zijn zeker de moeite en technisch mag dit er best wezen.
Enige minpuntjes aan dit schijfje zijn voor mij de soms wat ijle, hese , te breekbare stem van Noortje van der Voort en de iets te dunne productie. Dat de band zeker potentie heeft, staat als een paal boven water. Ik ben alvast benieuwd naar het vervolg.
In-Tension heeft hét. Nu nog de broodnodige centjes om het helemaal te laten knallen.
Een fijne verrassing.
